Louis Fensterbank
Ph. D., December 1993.
I am a CNRS Chargé de Recherche, working in the field of organic synthesis, mainly radical reactions. This is an academic position, since I work in a
university laboratory, dealing with undergraduate, graduate students and postdoc fellows.
I have been back in France since the end of 1993. I got my permanent CNRS position in 1995, after a one-year post-doctoral position.  I work at the
Pierre and Marie Curie University, which is located  in heart of Paris, very close to the Sorbonne and Notre-Dame. In 1996, I got married to Helene
Jousselin who is a former student of Tom Bell.  Here is her address : Helene.Jousselin@chimie.uvsq.fr   She has a lecturer position at the University of Versailles. We now live in Versailles near the Chateau, and we often row and bike on week-ends in the park. The Stony Brook  French Connection is still very active : we meet from time to time with David Machnik, Olivier Duclos, Sabine Fontana, Thierry Brigaud, Martine Zucco...

Leopoldo Della Ciana
here is some information about myself you might find useful.
My name is Leopoldo Della Ciana. Born in Lugo(Ravenna), Italy, May 2, 1954.  I came to the U.S.A. in the spring of 1979, soon after  graduating in chemistry (MS) at the University of Bologna, Italy. I met Prof. Albert Haim while visiting the University. Albert  knew my former advisor in Italy (prof. Vincenzo Balzani) and after talling with him I decided to enrol as a Ph.D. student. I got my degree in the summer of 1984 with a thesis on electron transfer. I then went to North Carolina for a 2 year postodoctoral felloship with Prof. Thomas J. Meyer, where I developed the chemistry of 2,2'-bipyridines, aimed at solar energy applications. It turned out that this chemistry was crucial to the development of electrochemiluminescent  markers which were hot on the agenda of Igen, Inc.,  a recently started biotech  company.  Therefore I joined Igen in the spring of 1986 and in a few months synthesized a large number of ruthenium, rhenium and ossmium complexes suitable as electrochemiluminescent markers. In 1991 this technology was acquired by Perkin Elmer for their QPCR instrument (Quantitative detection of PCR products), while in 1993 Boehringer Mannheim, Hitachi and Organon acquired the rights to use it for health care immunoassays. In 1995 the ELECSYS analyzer was put on the market in Europe and by 1998 almost a hundred different immunoassays could be performed on this machine. They main advantage of the electrochemiluminescent detection method is that it requires only a few minutes to be performed, instead of a couple of hours as with traditional ELISA and RIA methods.  Meanwhile, after finishing the researched at IGEN, I moved back to Europe and,
after a one year postoctoral fellowship at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, with professor, Alex von Zelewsky, I was hired as research group leader by Sorin
Biomedica, a large health care company located near Turin, Italy. My work at Sorin was initially focused on biosensors. Together with my coworkers I developed a
disposable sensor for the continuous detection of urea during dialysis, which allows the correct assessment of dialytic performance at a reasonable cost and its
very user friendly (no calibration required!). I alsoo developed an instrument for monitoring oxygen saturation and partial pressure and hematocrit during extracorporeal circulation. After 1995, I became involved in problems dealing with artificial organs.  My contrubututions in this field are a very effective anticalcification treatment
of biological heart valves, the development of vascular grafts coated with a biodegradable polymer and the in-situ preparation of radioactive vascular stents.
Recently I started, together with a former coworker and several professors from the Turin University, a biotech company called Innosense, located at Ivrea, Bioindustry Park (30 miles N of Turin, Italy). Our web page is http://www.innosense.it. Future news about myself and my company will be found at this site.
