Thank you for your interest in our program. The atmosphere at Stony Brook is both stimulating and exciting for our graduate students. Over 120 graduate students are pursuing investigations in over 20 research groups. The answers to many questions about our program that you may have are provided below. What type of financial support is available?
Twelve months of financial support is provided through teaching and research assistantships and industrial, university and departmental fellowships. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the stipend is $22,000 a year (plus subsidized health insurance and a full tuition scholarship), with an additional first year supplement depending upon your academic qualifications.
What fellowship opportunities are available?
Fellowship opportunities through the Department of Chemistry: Candidates may be nominated by the Graduate Program Director for the following fellowship programs after they have been admitted to the Chemistry Graduate Program:
U.S. Department of Education fellowships for Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) are available for students with excellent records and demonstrable financial need. GAANN fellows must be American citizens or permanent residents.
Graduate Council Fellowships are awarded on the basis of merit to students with excellent academic records. Fellows must be American citizens or permanent residents.
Turner Fellowships are awarded to qualified minority applicants in graduate programs in which they are traditionally underrepresented . Fellows must be American citizens or permanent residents.
Is there an application deadline or best time to apply?
Although we will consider an application file at any time and we do not have a deadline, it can be to your advantage to apply by February 1 if you wish to begin your studies in the fall. Earlier applications are encouraged, particularly for those wishing to be considered in the campus-wide competition for Graduate Council Fellowships.
Is there an application fee?
A non-refundable application fee of $60.00 is required unless you qualify for an Application Fee Waiver
How and when is my application reviewed?
Applications are reviewed by a committee of chemistry faculty. As soon as a complete file is received, we will review it. We pay particular attention to your letters of recommendation and prior research experience. We also examine your transcripts and Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. The fastest way for us to receive your application is by you submitting it online.
When will I hear whether I have been accepted?
We will make a decision as soon as we can after a completed application has been received. We find that the most common missing element from applications is letters of recommendation. Please request several weeks before you submit your application that your letters be sent.
