(III) BEILSTEIN CROSSFIRE TO BE HOSTED BY MIDAS
The Beilstein CrossFire plus Reactions Service negotiated back in November 1996 by CHEST, on behalf of the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), for the UK HEI community has to move from its current host site at the Chemical Database Service at the Daresbury Laboratory during 1997 to one of the JISC-funded data centres (i.e. BIDS, EDINA and MIDAS). After a competitive tendering exercise, MIDAS (Manchester Information Datasets and Associated Services) based at the University of Manchester has been chosen to be the new host of the Beilstein CrossFire service. MIDAS's bid was in collaboration with the John Rylands University Library of Manchester and the Joule Library at UMIST.
CrossFire gives access to the Beilstein and Gmelin databases. Beilstein is one of the world's largest chemical databases and spans information going back to the 18th century. CrossFire encompasses chemical information important to a wide range of scientific and medical users.
The CrossFire service at Daresbury will continue for the present. Detailed transition plans and start of service dates for the MIDAS CrossFire service will be widely circulated as soon as possible. The aim is to make this transition as transparent to existing users as possible and to minimise any possible disruption to service. Discussions with Daresbury CDS are already occurring.
MIDAS will put in place front-line and Helpdesk support. Specialist chemical, technical and training support will be provided by Chemical Information Specialists Dr. Alan Neville and Ms. Helen Schofield, based at the JRULM and Joule Library at UMIST, respectively. The extra value-added services, such as document delivery of primary chemical literature and access to the stock of JRULM, offered to CrossFire participants as part of the MIDAS bid, will be under the management of Dr. Diana Leitch, Assistant Director, JRULM. Alan, Diana and Helen, all of whom are chemists, are long-term experts in the use of the Beilstein and Gmelin databases.
Other Chemistry datasets currently hosted by MIDAS are the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) & Brookhaven Protein Data Bank, and the Mossbauer Effect Reference Database.
MIDAS is extremely pleased to be hosting this service in collaboration with JRULM and UMIST Library and to have the support of the two Chemistry departments at the University of Manchester and UMIST. We aim to provide the best possible service to existing and future users. Feedback from the user community will be vital to MIDAS and arrangements will be put in place to facilitate this. An Advisory Board drawn from a wide spectrum of the academic community, plus industrial advisors, reflecting the potential usage of this immense chemical database, has already been established. Details of the members will be issued shortly. There will be representation from the Chemical Database Service at Daresbury.
This service will operate as part of the overall National Services provided
to the UK HE community by Manchester Computing under the direction of Ms. Julia Chruszcz.
If you have any questions regarding the above please contact Mr. Sean Dunne, Head of Chemical Information Services at MIDAS, Manchester Computing, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL. (Email: S.Dunne@mcc.ac.uk, Phone: 0161 275 6065)

(i) MOLYBDENUM ENZYMES MEETING 12-15 April 1997, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK.
In recent months there have been dramatic advances in our understanding of molybdenum enzymes depending on pterin cofactors. Such enzymes play varied and important roles in organisms from primitive bacteria to higher plants and animals, including man. Genetic deficiencies related to human enzymes of this class are associated with severe clinical abnormalities, making the enzymes of biomedical importance. In addition, these enzymes frequently catalyse critical steps in the biological and environmental cycling of elemental nitrogen and sulphur, making them of considerable agricultural and environmental importance. Although these enzymes have been extensively studied by a variety of methods, in some cases for very many years, until recent months no structures from x-ray crystallography have been available. This situation has now changed dramatically, with the structures of three molybdenum-containing enzymes of different types published or about to appear. For one of these enzymes, the structure has been determined in three different laboratories.
While contributions on all aspects of the biochemistry or molecular genetics of enzymes depending on the pterin molybdenum cofactors would be welcome, as well as model compound chemistry relevant to their reaction mechanisms, it is proposed to concentrate principally on aspects of the structure and function of these enzymes.

BIOINORGANIC CHEMISTRY
2-5, September 1997; University of East Anglia/Nitrogen Fixation Laboratory, UK
ORGANISING COMMITTEE:
Dr A K Powell Dr R N F Thorneley Professor G R Moore Professor C D Garner Professor A J Thomson Professor P J Sadler
Following on from the first Dalton Discussion on Metal Clusters held in Southampton in 1995, the second Discussion to be held in Norwich covers the topic of bioinorganic chemistry. The role of inorganic chemistry in the processes of life has been acknowledged as both fundamental and fascinating. The science involved is wide-ranging, including inorganic synthesis, reaction kinetics and catalysis, protein engineering, structural and spectroscopic studies, and (macro)molecular modelling and mechanics calculations. The aim of this meeting is to focus on the more inorganic aspects of the area. The meeting will be held around five discussion sessions led by the members of the organising committee and will include a poster session.
1. Oxymolybdenum and oxotungsten enzymes 2. Metals in medicine 3. Mixed-valence metal clusters in biology 4. Biomineralisation 5. Small molecule activation by metalloproteins
Each session will include oral contributions from two key note speakers plus selected submitted papers. The aim is to promote lively debate of current important research and this will be a major criterion in the selection of contributions by the organising committee. Contributions accepted for oral presentation will be published as full papers in a special issue of Dalton Transactions and preprints will be available to attendees prior to the meeting.

SCOPE AND AIM: One of the main goals of modern protein chemistry is the understanding of structure-function relationships in biological molecules, that is, how a molecule with a precise spatial conformation and specific properties plays a particular role in the gearing of the cellular machinery. This is what we now call "molecular recognition", the means by which molecules recognize other molecules to interact with them - either forming active complexes so as to fulfill a specific role, such as transferring atoms or electrons between them, or for any other function as well. Despite the fact that we know a great deal about molecular recognition, even more still remains unknown: How molecules interact one with others inside the cells? What are the factors that control the reaction mechanisms? Which are the structural features that determine the physiological function? During this three-day meeting in Seville the state-of-the-art on this subject will be discussed.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED Cytochromes and their redox partners Cu-containing proteins Ferredoxins and oxidoreductases Non-redox metalloproteins Crystal and solution structures of proteins complexes Algorithms used for prediction of molecular interactions Current trends in macromolecular recognition

(xiv) THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TRACE ELEMENT SPECIATON IN BIOMEDICAL, NUTRITIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
May 4 -7, 1998
GSF - Forschungszentrum Neuherberg/Munchen, Germany
Six International Workshops on Trace Element Analytical Chemistry in Medicine and Biology have been organized in the years 1980 - 1991 in the GSF Research Centre. More than 5 years are past now and the topics in Trace Analytical Chemistry have significantly changed in the last decade. No longer are the concentration values in a certain matrix in the foreground of our interest. Instead of this, knowledge about the species like oxidation state, binding forms, etc becomes more and more of interest for a better understanding of the role of all trace elements in the biomedical, nutritional as well as the environmental field. Speciation becomes a new challenge to the analytical chemist, because nearly all wellknown steps in classical trace element analysis change. Furthermore, Speciation has not been a central focus of symposia concerning trace element studies. Our intention now is to focus on these broad, new and sometimes diffuse activities and to create a forum for open discussions about very new and perhaps not fully established ffindings Speciation is an often used term in the literature, but not generally well defined. Some different definitions, outgoing from very different points of view, are available. Mainly derived from the analytical method used, the species are defined from a functional or operational standpoint or as a specific chemical form (ligand) or oxidation state. The challenge for speciation research should be the latter one, that is identification and quantification of the species.
Invitation and Call for Papers
The Scientific Committee extends an invitation to all scientists involved and/or interested in ,,Speciation Analysis". A major goal of the Conference is to facilitate discussions about all aspects of this very new analytical field, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, essentiality and nutrition, medical uses and environmental sciences.
The Scientific Programme
The Conference Programme will comprise three days of oral presentations, posters and extended time for discussion. Oral presentation (invited or submitted) will be sixty or twenty minutes in duration including the specific discussion. The tradition established in the six Workshops of assigning a prominent and central role to poster presentations will continue. Consequently, special poster discussions in the auditorium will be organized, where the authors will have the possibility to present orally the highlights of their poster. Round table discussions will be organized on special topics. (The organizing committee would, at this stage, welcome
suggestions for special topics.) On the fourth day, short courses related to highly significant methods, problems and applications will be offered. The main topics of the First International Conference will be (For every topic the ,,state of the art" will be presented by a plenary lecture):
Separation and hyphenated techniques Quality assurance and reference materials in speciation analysis Speciation in the biomedical field Speciation in the environmental field Speciation in the nutritional field Speciation in occupational health Speciation and legislation
Conference Proceedings
As for the previous six Workshops, all papers presented as posters or lectures may be submitted as full papers for publication, now in the "Fresenius' Journal of Analytical Chemistry" subject to the normal review procedure of the journal.
Conference Location
The venue of the Conference is the GSF-Research Center (Auditorium) in Neuherberg near Munich (Germany).
Registration Fee
The registration fee per delegate is DM 650.-- and includes one free copy of the Proceedings, the Workshop-Dinner and Coffee-Breaks. The registration fee for students is DM 350.--. Single day registration (without Proceedings and Dinner) is DM 250.--.The fee for one course (half a day) will be DM 150.--For accompanying persons DM 150.-- are quoted (includes Conference Dinner and Social Programme).
