This programme was initiated by the European Science Foundation in November 1990 and has run for 5 years, i.e. from 1991 through 1995. The programme is intended to strengthen the interaction of bioinorganic chemists and to facilitate collaborations between European scientists involved in this field.

We have achieved an extension of this programme for the years 1996 and 1997.

I M P O R T A N T N O T E:

Anyone who wishes ESF-support for a W O R K S H O P to be organized in 1996 and 1997 has to submit a formal proposal (for details see below) before 31 May, 1996, to Dr A Wiklund (with a copy to Professor C David Garner).

A proposal should contain the following information:

- name(s) of the organizer(s) - topic of the workshop - probable place (town/country) and proposed date of the event - names of possible speakers; however, these should at this point NOT be contacted yet, because there is no guarantee that a submitted proposal will be granted! It should also be kept in mind that in the maximum in total 50 (mainly young) participants are usually allowed - approximate budget, indicating how much is requested from the ESF and how much will be obtained from other sources.

At present the following countries are members of the European Science Foundation located in Strasbourg:

AUSTRIA BELGIUM DENMARK FINLAND FRANCE GERMANY GREECE HUNGARY ICELAND IRELAND ITALY NETHERLANDS NORWAY POLAND PORTUGAL SPAIN SWEDEN SWITZERLAND TURKEY UNITED KINGDOM

JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

A Publication of the Society of Biological Inorganic Chemistry

Biological Inorganic Chemistry is a field of science which embraces the principles of Biology and Inorganic Chemistry and which has grown tremendously in recent years. This field has important implications for many other sciences, ranging from medicine to the environment. Furthermore, studies of the roles of metal ions in biological systems often involve the development of relevant chemistry, new methodologies of investigation and the application of advanced physical techniques.

The Journal of Biological Inorganic Chemistry (JBIC) will seek to promote this field internationally. This new journal will be primarily concerned with advances in the understanding of systems involving one or more metal ions set in a biological matrix - particularly, metalloproteins and metal- nucleic acid complexes - in order to understand biological function at the molecular level. Manuscripts describing high quality and original research concerned with metal ions or other "inorganic" species and having biological relevance are invited for submission to this journal. Mini-reviews and commentaries are also accepted.

Sovago; Israel, M. Chevion; Italy, G. Natile; Ireland, K. Nolan; The Netherlands, J. Reedijk; Norway, E. Sletten; Poland, H. Kozlowski; Portugal, C.F. Geraldes; Romania, I. Haiduc; Slovakia, M. Melnik; Slovenia, P. Bukovec; Spain, F. Gonzalez-Vilchez; Sweden, B. Akermark; Switzerland, Th. A. Kaden; UK, P.J. Sadler; Ukraine, V. Kokozay.

The new Action (D8) was approved in principle by the EC Committee of Senior Officials at their meeting in December. Official translations are being made and individual countries can join the Action by signing the appropriate agreement. You should contact your national COST representative to request that this be done.

Once countries have signed, then the new Action can begin, and groups of research workers can request COST status.

Project areas will include:

1. Chemistry of metallodrugs in clinical use. 2. Radiopharmaceuticals and imaging agents for diagnosis and therapy. 3. Investigations of the chemistry of metalloproteins, metalloenzymes and prosthetic groups (coenzymes) relating to the detection and diagnosis of disease. 4. Speciation of metal compounds of medical importance. 5. Design and synthesis of metallodrugs including computational chemistry and modeling.

It is hoped that an exploratory workshop will be held in the Autumn so that an initial exchange of ideas between representatives form the various countries can take place and facilitate the setting up of project groups. Applications for COST status should be made planned carefully and made as strong as possible.

SCOPE OF CONFERENCE

The purpose of EICS-VI is to discuss the chemistry of coordination compounds in relation to biological systems. The way metalcentres are organised in biological systems is often reminiscent of structures found in minerals, so the principles behind design of extended systems will also be explored. Specially designed coordination compounds play a crucial role in the understanding of catalytic activities of metalloproteins. Some of these synthetic compounds might also play a crucial role in the development of new tailor-made catalysts ("synzymes"). Creation of desired ordering on a molecular level in organic solids and metal coordination polymers to effect specific properties arising from this ordering is a timely area of research.

The conference is open to researchers world-wide, whether from industry or academia. Participation will be limited to 100. A poster session will also be organised. The emphasis will be on discussion about new developments. The Registration fee covers full board and lodging. Grants will be available from younger scientists, in particular those from less favoured regions in Europe.

In this section Ph.D. students or Post-docs may seek a position by providing their address plus one or two sentences describing their interests.

(i) RAJIV BHALLA

My PhD thesis, completed under the supervision of Professor C D Garner, at the University of Manchester, has involved the design and synthesis of a variety of poly-imidazole ligands and the investigation of their coordination with copper as potential analogues of copper proteins.

These ligands are able to bind to various metal centres to produce complexes with a low coordination number. The physical properties of these novel systems have been investigated.

I am now seeking a post-doctoral position which will hopefully enable me to continue my research into biological inorganic chemistry.

Please contact me at Dave.Garner@Man.ac.uk.

(ii) CHRIS TANNER

I am a final year postgraduate student studying the active site structure and function of the non-haem iron enzyme Soybean Lipoxygenase-1 with Dr S. Navaratnam at NEWI in Wrexham.

My interests include fast reaction kinetics using the Pulse-radiolysis facility at Christies Hospital in Manchester and computer-based simulation of active site structure (I also have a limited EXAFS knowledge obtained at the Synchrotron Facility at Daresbury.

I am looking for a Post-doctoral position in the bioinorganic field so that I may continue to pursue this line of work in the future.

I would appreciate greatly any details of Bioinorganic Post-docs available for late 1996/early 1997 start (as I expect to obtain my PhD around this time), preferably based in the UK.
