The Arctic Action Sets

In 1986 the Arctic Action Sets were introduced. The series consisted of four models numbered in the 8600s. It is the only theme set introduced so far in the Technic series. The basic color of all of the sets was white with a unique blue logo on each of the larger three models. The smallest model the Snow Scooter(USA) or Ski Buggy(UK) was a small car with a Technic figure and a pair of skis. The 8640 Polar Copter(USA) or Ski Chopper(UK) was a medium size helicopter with a figure and a pair of skis as well. The 8660 Arctic Rescue Unit(USA) or 6-Wheeled Snow Ranger(UK) was the first Technic vehicle to have front and rear steering. A small red crawler fit into the back of the unit. Two figures were included. The largest model, the 8680 Mountain Rescue Base(UK), was never sold in the USA. The main model had a large box like structure with a landing platform for a small red helicopter. The landing platform was under pneumatic control. Two figures and their skis were also included in this set.

In the 1988 UK catalog one of my all time favorite printing errors can be found. The 8660 set was labeled as the 5-Wheeled Snow Ranger!
