1977-1979
The Original Series

The first Technic sets were called Expert Builder Sets in the USA. The first four sets were released in 1978 following their European introduction the preceding year. The set numbers in the USA were different than the original European numbers.

The smallest of the original sets was the 948 Go Cart. This set has a one cylinder engine with a 2x2 square piston. It had a sticker with a large number 9. The 952 Farm Tractor was a very solidly built model with instructions for a variety of farm implements as accessories. The Sky Copter was surely one of the most exciting sets. It had a very sophisticated steering mechanism for the rotor blades. The largest set was the 956 Auto Chassis. This was a massive vehicle with a four cylinder engine. Primitive by today's standards, there was no differential and no suspension system. However it did have adjustable seats and a folding armrest!

In 1979 three additional sets were released. The smallest new set was the 950 Fork Lift with a simple geared lift mechanism. The 951 Bulldozer set was one of the most realistic appearing Technic sets of all time. It had crawler treads and a double action control for the scoop. The largest of the new sets was the 955 Mobile Crane. This set was very solidly built with a very large brick count for a model of this size. The crane operation was very smooth.
