NaCl consists of cubic close packed chloride anions (yellow) with sodium
cations (red) located in the octahedral holes. Each chloride has six
sodium neighbors and each sodium has six chloride neighbors. In
this view you are looking down the diagonal of the cubic lattice.
In this view the corner of the structure shown in the first view has been removed. The close packed layer structure can now be seen more clearly.
