The Professional Environment
The Department of Chemistry at SBU is an integral part of an expansive research environment.
Research in our biological and organic chemistry programs is largely cross disciplinary. As a result, we have developed numerous collaborations with the biology departments on campus as well as within the school of medicine, located in the Stony Brook Hospital right across the street. Many of our faculty are also members of other graduate programs, including Pharmacological Sciences, Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology and Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. We also have extensive interaction with schools within the greater NY city area, including Cold Springs Harbor, Columbia, Sloan-Kettering, NYU and Albert-Einstein.
Our Physical, Inorganic and Materials programs have significant interaction with the nearby Brookhaven National Lab, which is administered by Stony Brook University. Many of our faculty have positions both at BNL and SBU and make use of the significant research expertise and instrumentation available at BNL. BNL houses the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), NASA Space Radiation Lab (NSRL) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The recently completed Center for Functional Nanomaterials is a state of the art facility for the production and characterization of molecular materials.
Networking Opportunities:
The numerous departments on campus hold a large number of stimulating seminars. In addition, our students often attend talks and conferences at BNL and NYC area schools. Of particular note is the New York Academy of Sciences, which regularly hosts a meetings discussing various aspects of the chemical sciences. These meetings are held on the 40th floor of the World Trade Center 7 tower and represent a hub for the NYC scientific community.
