I regret that I must pass along the news of the death of Theodore Goldfarb, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. He passed away on Wednesday morning after a long battle with cancer. When it came time for Ted to retire last fall he left behind career which was an extraordinary one, having joined the faculty in 1959 and having made several seminal contributions to the growth of the University since its birth.
As a scholar in the field
of environmental chemistry he authored and edited many works in diverse areas
photolysis, infrared spectroscopy, ethics in science, nuclear power and
waste management. As a teacher he was honored with the Chancellor's Award for
Excellence in Teaching (1979), selected as an awardee in the National
Faculty Salute sponsored by the American Association of Higher Education, the
Carnegie Foundation and Change magazine (1986), and received the State of New
York and United University Professions Award for Excellence for his innovative
curriculum contributions, pedagogical projects, scholarship and service to the
University (1990). As a dedicated University citizen Ted served as University
Ombudsman (1967-69), Director of the Stony Brook Teaching Fellows Program (1986-91),
Acting Director of the Federated Learning Communities (1990-92), and President
of the College of Arts & Sciences Senate (1990-92).
